Posted On: 29 JAN 2023 5:02PM by PIB Chennai

The Science-20 (S-20) Inception Meeting is scheduled to take place in Puducherry during 30-31 January 2023. The meeting is Co-Chaired by Prof Ashutosh Sharma, President, Indian National Science Academy (INSA). Indonesia and Brazil are Troika members along with India during India’s G20 Presidency.

The S20 Engagement Group, comprising the national science academies of the G20 countries, was initiated during Germany’s Presidency in 2017. It presents policymakers with consensus-based science-driven recommendations formulated through task forces comprising international experts.

A total of 15 foreign delegates from 11 G20 countries Australia, Brazil, China, European Union, France, India, Republic of Korea, Türkiye, Russia, United Kingdom, and United States of America are participating in the Inception meeting. About 50 delegates, special invitees from various research and academic institutions across India are also participating in the Puducherry S20 Inception meeting.

India, as the President of G20, will aspire to make G20 truly “inclusive, ambitious, decisive, and action-oriented”, as exhorted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The agenda of S20 reflects this principle in the planning and use of science for inclusive and sustainable development.

The theme for Science-20 this year is Disruptive Science for Innovative and Sustainable Development. Under this broad theme, the subsequent meetings of the S20 will focus on three areas: clean energy for a greener future, universal holistic health, and connecting science to society and culture. The venues for the subsequent meetings include Agartala (Tripura), Bangaram Island (Lakshadweep), and Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh). The final summit meeting will take place in Coimbatore (Tamil Nadu).

The goal of the S20 inception meeting is to set the overarching agenda for the rest of these meetings so that detailed inputs will be provided by the scientific academies of the G20 member states.

S20 will catalyze and achieve fruitful scientific dialogue between the G20 member states and provide constructive solutions for global problems such as energy equity, healthcare and wellbeing, and making science an integral part of society. Addressing these challenges requires cross-disciplinary and multilateral scientific collaborations and global alliances.

The S20 Inception meeting shall promote and encourage fruitful scientific dialogue between the G20 member nations towards providing constructive solutions for problems such as climate change, healthcare, and making science an integral part of society and culture. The agenda for these discussions are also in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the 2030 Agenda.
