The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting today organised a media interaction and millet lunch at Ludhiana Club in association with Kheti Virasat Mission.

The Government of India sponsored the International Year of Millets (IYM) 2023 proposal, which was approved by the UN General Assembly (UNGA). The Indian Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, has also expressed his desire for IYM 2023 to become a "People's Movement" and for India to become a "Global Hub for Millets." PIB Chandigarh is spearheading this movement in the region. They have had millet lunches organized in Tarn Taran and Chandigarh too for the local media with the idea of encouraging the media to give more media space to millets and its promotion.

Sh. Rajender Chaudhry, ADG, PIB Chandigarh, stated during the conversation that "today's young generation is seeing various health related difficulties from an early age due to adoption of the Fast Food Culture of the West. Millets can aid in the fight against various health problems. Millets are gluten-free, high in protein, and have a low glycemic index. Thus, they could also help in weight loss.”

“Millets are beneficial for both consumers and farmers as well as the environment”, he continued. “Millets require less water and electricity to produce. Millets help combat a lot of disorders like obesity, diabetes, anaemia, hormonal imbalance, high cholesterol, etc., so consumers will live healthy lives. Consequently, it is a wonderful source of balanced nutrients. The purpose of today's event is to raise media awareness of millets. As a result, consumption will rise as well, which will raise demand”, he said.

The event's special speaker, Sh. Umendra Dutt, Executive Director of Kheti Virasat Mission, stated: "Millets are no longer considered to be a fringe crop. They are in competition with the cyclical agriculture of rice and wheat. Additionally, they can lessen our carbon footprint. "Millet stalk is a very nice food for cattle," he observed when discussing the burning of stubble. “Farmers don't burn the Millet stalk due to its usage as cattle fodder. This could be an answer to Punjab's stubble burning issue too.”

Sh. Raspinder Singh, Millet growing farmer from Jagraon also spoke on the occasion and pointed that millets are also an integral part of the G-20 meetings and delegates will be given a true millet experience through tasting, meeting farmers and interactive sessions with start-ups associated with millets. He also said, “The earnest effort of the government is truly being seen in the celebration of the International Year of Millets 2023 so that millets can get the due attention, and the same is the intention from the current meet too.”
