DRI seizes 1.96 lakh sticks of Smuggled Foreign Cigarettes worth Rs. 40 lakhs at Surat Railway Station

In the fight against illegal tobacco products, Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI)’s yet another strike has resulted in seizure of smuggled foreign origin cigarettes worth Rs.40 lakhs approx. from a railway parcel that arrived at Surat Railway Station.

 

Based on specific intelligence, officers of DRI intercepted a railway parcel destined to Surat from Chennai at Surat Railway Station from which 1,96,320 sticks of smuggled Foreign Origin Cigarettes of brands Esse Lights (Korean), Gudang Garam (Indonesian) and 555 (UK) were recovered. The market value of the same is estimated to be Rs 40 lakhs and the goods have been detained under the provisions of the Customs Act 1962.

 

DRI in Gujarat has been waging a vigorous battle against smuggling of Cigarettes and other nicotine products that are harmful to health. In this financial year alone, DRI has seized 2,88,40,800 sticks of smuggled Foreign origin cigarettes and 2,86,198 sticks of E-cigarettes (Vapes) worth Rs 138 crores in Gujarat. Apart from seizures at ports and highways, DRI is breaking the modus of smuggling of cigarettes through the rail route as well.
