Maintaining satisfactory level of operational and buffer stocks of food grains to ensure National Food Security - Food Corporation of India - Chennai Division

The Food Corporation of India was setup under the Food Corporation's Act 1964 , in order to fulfill following objectives of the Food Policy:
Effective price support operations for safeguarding the interests of the farmers.
Distribution of foodgrains throughout the country for public distribution system.
Maintaining satisfactory level of operational and buffer stocks of food grains to ensure National Food Security. Since its inception, FCI has played a significant role in India's success in transforming the crisis management oriented food security into a stable security system.
Storage: Chennai Division holds two field depots [Avadi and Egmore] and 1 Silo at Elavur with a storage capacity of 1.9 LMTs sufficient to hold buffer stock for a period of more than a year for the Chennai / Thiruvallur district.
Movement: Tamilnadu is a deficit state in Rice/Wheat Procurement and in order to meet out the deficit, Rice/Wheat is received from Punjab, Haryana, Andhra Pradesh/ Telungana, Chhattisgarh and Odisha through Rail/Road fed in a year, approx. 80 to 100 rakes were handled to an quantity of 2.5 LMT by this division.
Distribution: Chennai Division had issued 1.9 LMT of rice and 0.17 LMT of wheat to Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana at free of cost and24 lakhs no. of people of Chennai/Thiruvallur district benefited under this scheme per month. Further, 8883 MT of Fortified Rice issued under MDM and WBNP [ICDS] to help the poor people to overcome the malnutrition so far.
The Distribution of Fortified Rice was started in 2021-22 on pilot basis. The rice is enriched with micro nutrients iron, Vitamin B12, folic acid which would greatly help children and elders to overcome the problem of malnutrition as per National Institute of Nutrition [NIN].

Initiatives:
To enhance managing of end to end operations at FCI depots, Depot Online System[DOS] was implemented which captures real time data for transparency.
To monitor the godown from remote location CCTV cameras are installed, which instilled more sense of responsibility in employees/workers and also improved operational efficiency. To showcase transparency in activities of FCI Godowns CCTV live feed was implemented at all godowns.
All the depots are registered with Warehousing Development and Regulatory Authority.
The Quality of Rice/Wheat, stacked at FCI undergoes sample testing with NABL accredited laboratory for every six month. The stocks passes the FSSAI specification before it is issued out to PDS/TNCSC.The depots under DO-Chennai maintains Zero infestation at all times.
