In a major development, Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has seized various cosmetics items of reputed brands worth Rs. 74 crores approx. from a container imported at APSEZ, Mundra.

Based on specific intelligence, a container destined to APSEZ, Mundra from China was put on hold on suspicion of containing misdeclared/contraband goods. While the description of the goods in the documents was 773 packages of 'Vanity Case', on detailed examination, it was found that the initial few rows consisted of the declared goods and behind them were found concealed various types of cosmetics like Make up Foundation, LipGloss, Hair Conditioner, Liquid Eyeliner, Beauty Oil and creams etc of different brands like Mac, Nars, L’Oreal, Laura Mercier, Maybelline and Matrix. The consignment was detained as the goods were found in contravention of the Customs Act.

 

The market value of the branded cosmetics was estimated to Rs. 74 crores approx. DRI will investigate this case from IPR point of view.

DRI in Gujarat has kept a tight vigil over smuggling of various contrabands including Cosmetic items from China. Moreover, the focus on smuggling by DRI has been tightened ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections in Gujarat and the Model code of conduct being in place.
