MoSPI organizes nationwide quiz contests on official statistics for college/university students


First Champion Winner of Quiz Contest held at Lokmanya Tilak Municipal Medical College awarded trophy and cash prize of Rs. 5000

As part of iconic week celebrations under Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, Field Operations Division, Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) today organized a nationwide quiz contests on official statistics for college/university students & alumni at State Capital Regional Offices.

In Mumbai, the event was organised at Lokmanya Tilak Municipal Medical College in Sion by the Field Operation Division of National Statistical Office here. 86 students from 43 different colleges/universities of Mumbai and nearby cities participated in the event.

Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Statistician of India and Secretary, MoSPI, Shri G.P Samanta expressed his happiness for overwhelming participation of students in the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav Iconic Week. Addressing participating students, he said ‘Some of the students and young minds of today will be decision-makers when India will be celebrating 100 years of independence’. It is essential to make them aware about official statistics, he added.

Reiterating the relevance of statistical information Shri G.P Samanta said, the statistical information covers various areas like economics and socio-demographic factors which are critical for policy decisions. Referring to the famed DIKW pyramid, he explained the importance of statistical tools and techniques which also provide means for extracting the right information, knowledge and wisdom for policy framework.

Shri Samanta said, In India, statistical information is applied to cover the scopes in the fields of agriculture, industry, civil supplies and others. National Statistics Office collects, processes and disseminates data and conducts survey on various economic and social statistics factors like GDP, Per capita income, inflation rate, consumer price index etc. He added, “The National Sample Survey Organization under MoSPI conducts sample surveys on behalf of the GOI from about 14,000 villages and urban areas in the country and provides information about how the population, by and large, is faring.  Till date, NSSO has conducted 79 rounds of sample survey and these data serve as a backbone to Indian economic planning”.

Detailing the significance of the event, Shri Samanta said, With the spirit of involving students in celebration of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, the event intends to promote awareness about Official Statistics and enlighten the young minds about various facets of Indian official statistical system.

Shri G.P Samanta further said Amrit Mahotsav is an elixir that provides inspiration from the warriors of freedom struggle for new ideas, pledges and attaining ‘aatmanirbharta’. “This Mahotsav is therefore a festival of awakening, fulfilling the dreams of good governance and global peace and development”, he said.

Mr. Madhur Rajan Tike & Mr. Shawn Jacob of R A Podar College of Commerce and Economics were declared the first Team Champion. They received a Trophy and a cash reward of Rs 5000/-. Participants from L S Raheja College and SIES Nerul College of Arts, Science and Commerce were declared the 1st Runner-Up and 2nd Runner-Up and they received trophies and cash prizes of Rs. 3000/- and Rs. 2000/- respectively. All participating students received certificate for participation.

Smt Supriya Roy, Deputy Director General, Dr. Mohan Joshi, Dean, Lokmanya Tilak Municipal Medical College, Sion Mumbai and Shri Vijay Aher, Director, Directorate of Economics and Statistics, Govt of Maharashtra were present at the event.

On the sidelines of the event, Chief Statistician of India & Secretary, MoSPI Shri G.P. Samanta inaugurated an exhibition and bookstall under Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav at Lokmanya Tilak Municipal Medical College in Mumbai organized by Central Bureau of Communication, Pune (Maharashtra & Goa), Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and Directorate of Publications Division, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting respectively.
