In its continuous efforts to curb menace of cyber-crimes in Gujarat, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Gujarat LSA identified more than 8100 SIM cards which were obtained giving fake Aadhar cards by the miscreants to the different telecom service providers.

The field units of Department of Telecommunications i.e. Licensed Service Area (LSA) carry out monthly sample audit of the subscriber application forms (electronic and hardcopy) submitted by the subscribers to the telecom service providers to obtain mobile connection. During the recent audit by Gujarat LSA, certain specific patterns were observed which indicated to use of fake Aadhar cards to obtain SIM cards. After detailed analysis, more than 8100 such mobile numbers were identified and were got blocked by DoT, Gujarat LSA.

There is close coordination between CID Cyber Crime Police, Gujarat state and DoT, Gujarat LSA and the details of these mobile numbers using fake Aadhar cards were immediately given as vital lead and input by DoT, Gujarat LSA to CID Cyber Crime Police, Gujarat state. Acting on this information, a team of CID Cyber Crime Police Gandhinagar raided a mobile SIM selling shop of Chaduvav village n Gir Somnath district on 25.03.2022 and arrested five persons. More such raids by the CID Cyber Crime Police Gandhinagar are expected.

The modus operandi used by the miscreants was to create fake Aadhar card with his own photo. Then the miscreants approached in person to the mobile SIM selling retailers of the telecom service providers to obtain new mobile connection. On verification of this fake but seemingly original Aadhar card and matching the photo on this Aadhar with the person, the mobile SIM card selling retailer used to issue new mobile connection miscreant, though in some cases the possibility of the involvement of the mobile SIM card selling retailers can not be ruled out.
