Success Rate of Ganga Action Plan

Government of India (GOI) has plan to clean the river Ganga and has launched the Namami Gange Programme in 2015 with a budgetary outlay of Rs.20,000 crore. Under this Programme, a diverse set of interventions for cleaning and rejuvenation of river Ganga and its tributaries were taken up including waste water treatment, solid waste management, river front management (ghats and crematoria), maintaining continuous flow, rural sanitation, afforestation, biodiversity conservation and Public Participation etc. Namami Gange is a scientific programme and has been developed with an integrated approach based on Ganga River Basin Management Plan (GRBMP) prepared by a consortium of 7 IITs led by IIT-Kanpur.

A total of 364 projects have been taken up at a sanctioned cost of Rs.30,853.5 crore, out of which, 183 projects are completed.  The projects are taken up along the main stem towns of river Ganga as well as on 15 tributaries namely Yamuna, Kosi, Saryu, Ramganga, Kali (West), Kali (East), Gomti, Son, Barakar, Hindon, Burhi Gandak, Banka, Damodar, Rispana-Bindal and Chambal.

Considering the need and spread of the programme, Govt. of India has further approved Namami Gange Mission –II with a budgetary outlay of Rs.22,500 crore till 2026, for ongoing and new projects/interventions.  

The final estimates and funds released  by Government of India and subsequently disbursed/released by National Mission for Clean Ganga  during the last three financial years i.e. FY 2018-19, 2019-20, 2020-21 and  for the financial year 2021-22 till 28th February, 2022 are tabulated below:-

Cleaning of river is a continuous process and Government of India is supplementing the efforts of the State Government in addressing the challenges of pollution in river Ganga and its tributaries by providing financial and technical assistance under Namami Gange Programme. The projects are now taken their paces and efforts are being made to complete the projects by their scheduled completion timelines.
