About 40 lakh sugarcane farmers of co-operative sugar mills were benefitted in sugar season

The Union Minister of State for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Ms. Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti in a written reply to a question in Lok Sabha today informed that the state-wise number of cooperative sugar mills operated during 2019-20 and 2020-21 sugar season is given at Annexure. About 40 lakh sugarcane farmers associated with these co-operative sugar mills were benefitted.
The data on cane produced, cane crushed by the sugar mills and sugar produced during last two sugar seasons 2019-20 and 2020-21 in the country and particularly in the state of Uttar Pradesh is as under:

Further, in Uttar Pradesh, 24 co-operative sugar mills having daily cane crushing capacity of 66,625 Tonnes operated during sugar season 2020-21 and 4,68,751 sugarcane farmers were benefitted.
Production of ethanol from sugarcane based feed-stocks and its supply to Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) under Ethanol Blended with Petrol (EBP) Programme has increased. During Ethanol Supply Year (ESY) 2019-20, the total ethanol produced and supplied under EBP was 173 crore litres whereas during ESY 2020-21, 302 crore litres of Ethanol has been produced and supplied to OMCs. More than 86% of ethanol has been produced from sugarcane based feed-stocks by distilleries attached with sugar mills as well as molasses based standalone distilleries.
Many sugar mills produced brown sugar but data of quantity of brown sugar produced is not maintained.
Sugar mills are generating electricity mainly for their captive use and also exporting surplus power to grid. Data on electricity generated by sugar mills and the corresponding revenue generated through electricity production is not maintained by the Department.
