प्रविष्टि तिथि: 14 DEC 2021 12:45PM by PIB Chennai

Hallmarking of Gold Jewellery and Artefacts had been made mandatory. The purity/fineness of the Gold Jewellery/Artefacts are checked and certified by BIS recognized Assaying & Hallmarking Centres. BIS is also having the scheme of Hallmarking of Silver Jewellery. After checking the purity the same by the assaying center, the purity/fineness is marked on the Gold/Silver  Jewellery/Artefects which is in turn sold by the jewellers to common consumers.

There are rare instances wherein the customers are being cheated on lesser purity by the unlawful Jewellers / Hallmarking Centers itself. BIS came across one such case recently wherein an aggrieved customer who bought silver meal plates and a tumbler from a renowed jeweller. Suspecting the purity of the articles purchased, the customer tested the same in a Hallmarking Center and asked for the Certificate of Purity. When the same was refused, the customer got suspicion on unethical trade practices on the Hallmarking Center and didn’t hesitate to make a complaint with BIS.

BIS took action by acting on the complaint immediately and investigated the issue and took sever action against the unlawful Hallmarking Center and also ensured necessary redressal to the customer. It is to be noted that during the whole process of investigation, the customer was also kept in the loop and well informed on the actions taken by BIS to ensure at most transparency.

BIS being a service organisation, values common consumer the most and it is requested that in case any common public is cheated on Purity/Fineness in a Hallmarked Gold/Silver Jewellery/Artefect, either by a jeweller or a Hallmarking Center, the same may kindly be reported as a complaint to BIS either by visiting the nearest Branch Office or through phone/email/compliant portal in BIS Website/Letter or through BIS CARE APP (can be downloaded from Googleplay).
