Shortage of Old Age Homes

Posted On: 08 DEC 2021 5:30PM by PIB Delhi

In our country, elder care is provided largely by the family. However, to take care of the indigent elders, this Ministry supports NGO-run old age homes through grant in aid. The aim is to provide at least one old age home financed by Government in every district.

Presently, 551 Senior Citizen Homes/ Old Age Homes under the scheme of Integrated Programme for Senior Citizens are functioning. The State/UT wise details of number of Senior Citizen Homes/Old Age Homes is given at ANNEXURE-I.

Every old age home is thoroughly inspected by the Project Monitoring Unit (PMU). All complaints are examined during the inspection. Based on the reports of inspection reports, the grant-in-aid has been cancelled for 94 senior citizen homes in financial year 2021-22, which were not running the homes properly as per the scheme guidelines.
