NFAI acquires rare 16 mm footage from Mahratta Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture

National Film Archive of India has acquired rare 16 mm footage from the city based industry body, Mahratta Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture (MCCIA).

In a close event today, Mr Prashant Girbane, Director General, MCCIA handed over the reel to Mr Prakash Magdum, Director NFAI.  The rare footage is about 1200ft with duration of 35 minutes having historical value. It chronicles major events in MCCIA’s organizational history from the late 1940s to 1960s. Predominantly Black & White, the footage also features some parts in colour.

While handing over the film, MrGirbane said, “We discovered this footage recently in our premises and thought it fit to hand over to NFAI. We have requested NFAI to digitize this important footage.”

NFAI Director Mr Prakash Magdum said, “We are delighted to receive this rare footage from Mahratta Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture [MCCIA]. The initial inspection suggests that the footage is in good condition and we will take efforts to digitize the same. It is footage of immense archival value as it depicts the growth of infrastructural and industrial growth of the city over the years.”

The major highlights of the footage are snippets from the events such as the Silver Jubilee Ceremony, the inauguration of MCCIA’s building at Tilak Road in Pune, MCCIA’s monthly magazine Sampada (which started back in 1947), “Parishada ani Charcha – Sabha” with Felicitation of Mr. Shantanurao Kirloskar, and several other excerpts from varied events. Importantly, veteran freedom fighter and leader C. Rajagopalachari is also seen participating in one of the function at MCCIA. Adding the importance of the footage it also covers prominent institutes like Bank of Maharashtra and Pune Division Productivity Council and follows the industrial development in Pune Area and MCCIA’s efforts in same.

Shri Magdum requested MCCIA to facilitate in reaching out to old industrial organizations in the city for getting such rare footages and films.
