Works under MGNREGA mitigate sufferings of unemployed labourers in the region

Chandigarh, May 24, 2020

To mitigate sufferings due to lockdown in the light of COVID-19, a large number of unemployed labourers have been given work under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) in the region. With further relaxations in activities after the recent order of the Ministry of Home Affairs on 17th May 2020, works under the scheme will ensure the employment needs of labourers till the situation stabilizes. In Una, Himachal Pradesh, these works have come as a reprieve for labourers as they start working for ground water harvesting tank for community irrigation purposes. Under the “Aatma Nirbhar Bharat Abhiyan”, the Finance Minister Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman has recently announced that an additional Rs 40,000 crore will now allocated under MGNREGS. Paramjit Singh from SAS Nagar district in Punjab said that works under the scheme have been going well in his village and this additional allocation will ensure employment for the needy.

The additional allocation will generate nearly 300 crore person days in total addressing need for more work including returning migrant workers in Monsoon season as well. Creation of larger number of durable and livelihood assets including water conservation assets will boost the rural economy through higher production.
