NHRC, India takes suo motu cognizance of the reported suicide of a woman gang-raped in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh
Issues notices to the District Magistrate and Senior Superintendent of Police, Jhansi, for a detailed report on the matter within two weeks

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report that a 19 year-old woman committed suicide after being gang-raped by six people, including three minors. Reportedly, the woman went to a cattle barn for some work when the six accused allegedly caught her and gang-raped her.
The Commission has observed that the contents of the media report, if true, raise serious issues of violation of human rights. Therefore, it has issued notices to the Senior Superintendent of Police and the District Magistrate, Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh calling for a detailed report on the matter within two weeks. The report is expected to include the status of the investigation and compensation, if any, paid to the next of kin of the deceased.
According to the media report, carried on 23rd September 2026, the victim was distressed by the threats to circulate the video and consumed poison.
