The National Zoological Park (NZP), New Delhi, observed World Rhino Day 2026 today with a series of awareness and educational programmes aimed at promoting rhino conservation and strengthening public and school engagement in wildlife and biodiversity conservation.

As part of its school outreach initiative, the Zoo organised its first orientation programme for eco-club in-charge teachers. Teachers from 12 schools of Delhi participated in the programme. The Director (NZP) interacted with the teachers and highlighted the importance of strengthening collaboration between the Zoo and schools for environmental education and conservation awareness.

The orientation familiarised teachers with the Zoo’s environmental education initiatives, nature-based educational activities, citizen science initiatives and other outreach programmes. It also envisaged greater participation of schools in workshops, awareness programmes and competitions organised on important eco days and other relevant occasions.

A doodle activity and public awareness talk was subsequently organised for visitors at the Zoo’s exit gate. Zoo staff interacted with visitors and shared information on rhinoceros, their ecological significance, conservation status and the challenges faced by rhino populations in the wild. The programmes witnessed enthusiastic participation from school teachers and visitors and provided an important platform to enhance awareness about rhino conservation, wildlife protection and the need to conserve biodiversity.

A special keepers’ talk on rhinos was also organised at the rhino enclosures. Zoo keepers interacted with visitors and provided insights into rhino behaviour, feeding habits, daily care and scientific management at the National Zoological Park. At present, the National Zoological Park, New Delhi, has one adult female rhinoceros, named Anjuha, in its collection.
