Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Shri Nitin Gadkari, today launched ‘OneTag’, a NETC FASTag portability solution, at the Global Fintech Fest (GFF) 2026 in Mumbai. The initiative will enhance interoperability and provide greater choice and convenience to NETC FASTag users.
OneTag will enable users to switch their issuer bank while retaining the existing NETC FASTag affixed to their vehicle, eliminating the need to obtain a new physical tag. ‘OneTag’ is a joint initiative of Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL), a company promoted by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), and the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).

Shri Gadkari said that the next goal is to achieve a barrier-free tolling system with zero stoppage and zero waiting time, leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) and automatic number-plate recognition for seamless mobility. He emphasised that technology-driven tolling can further enhance efficiency, reduce waiting time and improve the overall mobility experience for National Highway users.

At present, customers seeking to change their NETC FASTag issuer bank are required to close their existing NETC FASTag and undergo a fresh onboarding process to obtain a new physical tag. ‘OneTag’ simplifies this process by enabling customers to switch their issuer bank based on their requirements, while retaining the NETC FASTag already affixed to their vehicle. Following successful portability, the existing Tag ID and vehicle registration number will remain unchanged, allowing users to continue using the same physical tag with a different issuer bank.
The service will be made available through NHAI’s Rajmargyatra mobile app. The app will guide users through the portability process, including eligibility checks, secure verification, customer consent, selection of the preferred issuer bank and subsequent onboarding. Under the portability framework, the existing issuer bank will handle customer verification and manage the previous wallet, refunds, pending transactions and related matters, while the selected issuer bank will complete the onboarding and provide services following successful portability.
The initiative will help improve NETC FASTag’s lifecycle management by reducing the need for repeated tag production, thereby lowering operational, dispatch and reissuance costs. ‘OneTag’ will also help streamline the issuer-switching journey, enhance customer choice and contribute to a more interoperable and efficient NETC FASTag ecosystem.
NPCI will provide the central technology framework, facilitate portability and update issuer details within the NETC system, while toll acquirers and plazas will continue to process transactions through the existing framework.

With a penetration rate of over 98 per cent and around 13 crore NETC FASTags issued, including approximately 6 crore active tags, FASTag has revolutionised the Electronic Toll Collection system in the country. The introduction of ‘OneTag’ will further strengthen the digital tolling architecture and provide NETC FASTag users with greater flexibility, while retaining the existing physical tag and providing greater convenience to National Highway users.
