Union Textiles Minister Shri Giriraj Singh Visits NIFT Mumbai and Interacts with Students

The Union Minister of Textiles Shri Giriraj Singh visit The National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Mumbai, today. He was accompanied by Development Commissioner (Handlooms) Dr. M. Beena, and Textile Commissioner Smt. Vrunda Manohar Desai.

The key highlight of the event was an interactive session between Hon’ble Union Minister of Textiles Shri Giriraj Singh and the students of NIFT Mumbai. The Minister encouraged students to contribute to employment generation, foreign exchange earnings and exports. The discussion covered India’s rich textile and handloom heritage, preservation of traditional knowledge, and creation of contemporary opportunities for artisans and weavers.

The Minister also emphasized the growing importance of sustainability, material innovation, and natural and composite fibres, while highlighting the potential of Artificial Intelligence, Blockchain and 3D printing to transform the textile and fashion sectors. He encouraged students to embrace emerging technologies while building on India’s strong foundations in craft, traditional knowledge and design.

Underlining the need to combine creativity and innovation with industry and business awareness, Hon’ble Union Minister of Textiles Shri Giriraj Singh encouraged students to develop skills that would make them globally competitive.

In his welcome address NIFT Mumbai, Director, Prof. Dr. Ajit Kumar Khare emphasized the importance of direct interaction between students and government leaders, helping young designers gain a better understanding of industry developments, policies and emerging opportunities.

Another major focus area of the visit was the inauguration of the new facility of Bunakar Seva Kendra (Weavers’ Service Centre), Mumbai, located within the NIFT Mumbai Campus, Kharghar, by Hon’ble Union Minister of Textiles Shri Giriraj Singh.

The inauguration was held in the august presence of Development Commissioner (Handlooms) Dr. M. Beena, Textile Commissioner of India Smt. Vrunda Manohar Desai, and senior officials and stakeholders. The new facility marks an important step towards strengthening support and services for India’s handloom and weaving community.
