The Libraries under the Ministry of Culture, Asiatic Society Kolkata and The Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Institute of Asian Studies (MAKAIS) Kolkata celebrated the 80^th Independence Day of India by organizing a series of programmes and activities. The celebrations included flag hoisting ceremonies, singing of patriotic songs, programmes, exhibitions, lectures, book displays, Tiranga Yatra, and other activities highlighting the country's freedom struggle and the spirit of patriotism.

National Library, Kolkata organized Independence Day समारोह with the rendition of Vande Mataram, followed by the welcome of guests, inspection of the parade and flag hoisting by the Director General and the singing of the National Anthem. The Director General, National Library addressed the gathering of officers and employees of the National Library. Independence Day was celebrated with patriotic fervour through a range of activities including a Tiranga Yatra, “Selfie with Tiranga” and other programmes to encourage public participation and spread the spirit of patriotism.

       

Delhi Public Library on the eve of Independence Day celebrations is organizing a series of programmes from 9^th to 17th August 2026 at its branches and sub-branches across Delhi, including the Chandni Chowk Library. The activities include special illumination and decoration of regional libraries, programmes on the role of youth, women and students in the Quit India Movement, Selfie Points and Tiranga Yatra, observance of Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, and dignified flag hoisting ceremonies.

                    

Khuda Bakhsh Oriental Public Library, Patna, will organize an exhibition of books on the theme “Patriotism” from 14 to 17 August 2026. A flag hoisting ceremony was held on 15^th August 2026 followed by a lecture on the “Freedom Movement” on 17 August 2026 .

 

 

  

The Independence Day programme at Central Reference Library, Kolkata, started with a welcome address and flag hoisting by Lt. Col. Dr. Anant Sinha, SLIO, followed by the singing of the National Anthem, full rendition of Vande Mataram by the staff members followed by distribution of sweets.

             

The Central Secretariat Library, New Delhi is organizing a display of books on the themes of the Freedom Movement and Independence Day at its Main Library, Shastri Bhawan and R.K. Puram Branch Library from 14th to 31st August 2026. A National Flag March was organized at Shastri Bhawan on 14 August 2026.

The Raja Rammohun Roy Library Foundation (RRRLF), Kolkata celebrates 80^th Independence Day with the hoisting of the National Flag  by its Director General, singing of the National Anthem and rendition of Vande Mataram by the officers and employees.

             

The Rampur Raza Library (RRL) organized a three-day themed exhibition, titled “Bharat Gatha: Sangharsh se Swadhinta, Swadhinta se Swabhiman, Swabhiman se Viksit Bharat”, from 13 to 15 August 2026. The celebrations will also include a patriotic selfie booth, tricolour illumination of the library building, tricolour rangoli depicting the map of India, installation of national flags, social media outreach, flag hoisting and group singing of Vande Mataram.

The Asiatic Society, Kolkata celebrates the 80th Independence Day on 15 August 2026 with a series of commemorative activities. The celebrations included the hoisting of the National Flag, rendition of Vande Mataram and the National Anthem, and laying a garland at the bust of Rishi Aurobindo. An exhibition titled “1857: The First War of Independence” inaugurated at the Heritage Building by Shri K.K. Mishra, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Culture, Government of India. The Society also organised flag-hoisting ceremonies at Raja Rajendra Mitra Bhavan, Salt Lake and 91, Ballygunge Place, Kolkata.

             

MAKAIAS celebrated Independence Day in a befitting manner. On 13th and 14th August, two Seminars on Partition Horror were organized. Research fellows, Research assistants, University students with others participated. Films on Swami Vivekananda, Cellular Jail, Matonggini Hazra, Dr. Shyama Prasad Mookerjee were played. Video recording statements of eye witnesses were taken. Flag hoisting celebrations with Partition Horror exhibition  organised on 15^th August 2026.

Through these programmes, the Ministry of Culture institutions pay tribute to the independence struggle and reaffirm their commitment to preserving and promoting the values of freedom, unity, patriotism and national integration among the citizens. It also renews India’s commitment to building a strong, prosperous, progressive and self-reliant India and achieve the vision of Viksit Bharat @2047.
