Agriculture is the backbone of India's rural economy, but inadequate post-harvest infrastructure often results in significant losses for farmers and limits their income. Modern cold storage facilities play a crucial role in preserving agricultural produce, improving its quality and extending its shelf life, thereby ensuring better market value for farmers. Demonstrating how timely institutional support can transform rural enterprises, Meenakshidevi Hi-Tech Agro Industry Pvt. Ltd., promoted by Ms. A. Amutha Devi, has emerged as an important contributor to agricultural infrastructure in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, through the establishment of a modern cold storage facility.

Recognising the project's potential to strengthen the agricultural value chain and generate rural employment, the Venture Capital Fund for Scheduled Castes (VCF-SC) under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment extended financial assistance of ₹4.95 crore in 2017 through Venture Capital assistance comprising Equity and Optionally Convertible Debentures. The financial support enabled the company to establish a 5,000 MTPA cold storage unit consisting of five chambers of 1,000 MT each, significantly enhancing post-harvest storage capacity in the region.

Modern Cold Storage Infrastructure for Agricultural Growth

The project has enabled the optimum utilisation of resources while ensuring better quality and longer shelf life of agricultural produce. By providing reliable storage infrastructure, the enterprise has empowered farmers to secure remunerative prices for their produce instead of resorting to distress sales. The initiative has also generated employment opportunities in rural areas, particularly for people belonging to weaker sections, thereby contributing to inclusive rural development.
