Union Minister for Housing & Urban Affairs reviews Swachh Bharat Mission–Urban progress in Madhya Pradesh; calls for accelerated implementation and sustaining progress

A review of Swachh Bharat Mission – Urban 2.0 for the State of Madhya Pradesh was held in Ujjain on 19th June 2026 under the chairpersonship of Shri Manohar Lal, Hon’ble Union Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs and Ministry of Power in the presence of
Shri Mohan Yadav, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Shri Kailash Vijayvargiya, Hon’ble Minister, Urban Development & Housing, Government of Madhya Pradesh and Smt. Pratima Bagri, Hon’ble Minister of State - Urban Administration & Development. Officers of Central and State Government were present in the meeting.
During the review, Hon’ble Union Minister noted that projects worth ₹3,680 crore have been approved for Madhya Pradesh under Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0, with Central Share of ₹2,036 crore which inter-alia include components such as legacy waste remediation, solid waste management, construction of toilets and used water management.

The Hon’ble Union Minister appreciated the State’s progress in legacy waste remediation noting that out of 57 lakh metric tonnes of waste across 109 ULBs in the State, more than 48 lakh metric tonnes have been processed, resulting in the recovery of 509 acres of land. Plantation has been undertaken on 100 acres as part of environmental conservation efforts. He also commended the State’s pioneering role in CBG sector, with operational
CBG plants in Indore and Gwalior. Additionally, five more plants coming up in Dewas, Ratlam, Morena, Burhanpur, and Khandwa.
He also highlighted that around 350 projects are being implemented for the treatment of used water generated by urban local bodies which will help controlling pollution in the Narmada River and other water bodies.
He commended the consistent performance of cities like Indore, Bhopal, and Ujjain under Swachh Survekshan. Under the Swachh Shehar Jodi initiative, 7 jodis of high performing cities (mentor) and low performing cities (mentee) have been formed in Madhya Pradesh to improve sanitation standards of mentee cities by adopting best practices and learnings from mentor cities.
The Hon’ble Union Minister noted that 374 ULBs in Madhya Pradesh have been included under the Urban Challenge Fund to address growing urban infrastructure needs. He highlighted that the initiative, supported by central assistance of ₹4,600 crore, will facilitate preparation of projects worth ₹18,400 crore, with special provisions to support smaller ULBs through credit guarantees.
The Hon’ble Union Minister noted that under CITIIS 2.0 scheme, a project worth ₹106 crore has been approved for Ujjain Municipal Corporation, with 80% funding from the Government of India to support implementation of a Climate Change Action Plan in the city.
Hon’ble Union Minister appreciated State’ efforts in preparation for upcoming Simhasth 2028 which is being planned on the concept of “Zero Waste”. For this, he emphasized that strengthening waste management systems is essential and high focus is to be given by State to ensure public health and cleanliness through robust preparedness and adequate facilities for management of both event-generated and local waste. Also, he observed that adequate high-quality toilets may be provided.
Hon’ble Union Minister reiterated that MoHUA will closely work with the State governments to achieve Government of India’s commitment to visible cleanliness and Swachhata in urban areas, keeping in the vision of Hon’ble Prime Minister.
