18th National Statistical Day Celebration

The Regional Office Mumbai (Field Operations Division) of the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO), under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, Government of India, proudly celebrated National Statistical Day on 29th June 2024. This event marks the birth anniversary of Prof. Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis, a pioneer in the field of statistics in India.

The theme for this year’s celebration was “Use of Data for Decision Making”. In today's data-driven world, the ability to analyse and interpret data is crucial for effective policy formulation and implementation. This theme underscores the importance of data literacy and the need for continuous improvement in our statistical methodologies.

The keynote address for today's event was delivered by Smt. Supriya Roy, Deputy Director General, NSSO Mumbai, emphasizing the significance of statistics in national development and the legacy of Prof. Mahalanobis. The event was graced by the presence of the Textile Commissioner of India Smt. Roop Rashi, who highlighted the role of data in the textile industry and its impact on policy-making. Other distinguished guests included officials of NSSO, students from Department of Statistics, B.N.Bandodkar College, the teachers & students of People Education Society Central School, CBD Belapur, Navi Mumbai and representatives from factories covered under Annual Survey of Industries who also participated and benefited from the celebrations.

The National Statistical Day celebration aimed to raise awareness about the role of statistics in socio-economic planning and policy-making, celebrate the contributions of Prof. P.C. Mahalanobis and his impact on modern statistical practices and highlight the importance of data for informed decision-making in various sectors.

NSSO Regional Office Mumbai reaffirms its commitment to maintaining the highest standards of accuracy, transparency, and ethical practice in statistical data collection work. The dedication and hard work of the officers and staff of NSSO and its regional offices play a crucial role in supporting evidence-based policymaking and national development.
