“The Navi Mumbai international Airport is not just an infrastructure project for Mumbai or Maharashtra, it is a project of pride for the entire nation” said Union Minster for Civil Aviation, Shri Jyotiraditya Scindia. He was in Navi Mumbai today to take an overview of the development of the Navi Mumbai International Airport. On the occasion, the Minister briefed the media about the status of the project.
The Minister stated that the project worth eighteen thousand crores will hugely benefit Mumbai’s connectivity and will be implemented in 5 Phases. The physical and financial progress has been completed upto 55-60%. The project began in 2018 and commercial operationalization is expected to start by 31st March 2025. In the First and the Second Phase that will begin together, one runway, one terminal and a passenger capacity of two crore will be created. The second runway, four terminals along with an increased passenger capacity of nine crore will be created in Phase 3, 4 and 5.
Referring to the vision of the Prime Minister to create multimodal connectivity under the Gati Shakti Yojana Shri. Scindia further added that Navi Mumbai international airport will have road, rail and metro connectivity with future plans of water connectivity as well.
The airport will be connected to the road in three directions - NH 4B (348), the Sion Panvel Highway and through Atal Setu. The Airport will be connected to Rail by Targhar Railway station. Metro connectivity to the airport will be via - metro line 2D: DN Nagar to Mandale – Mankhurd, metro line 8: Mumbai Airport to Navi Mumbai Airport and Navi Mumbai Pendhar Belapur Taloja metro line. In future it aimed at connecting the airport through hover craft from Colaba and through cargo from Raigad in Phase 2.
Apart from this the Minister explained that the Navi Mumbai International Airport will be the first airport in the country with automated passenger movement within its 1600 hectares for ten kms on city side and on airside. A hundred percent green airport is being created in the first phase. It is expected that the airport will lead to an increased air traffic in the country. The Government aims to double domestic passenger traffic in the country from the present 15 crore to 30 crores by 2030. There is also a resolve to create more than 200 airports in the country in the next six years.
Union Minister for Civil Aviation, Shri. Jyotiraditya Scindia also thanked the State Government and CIDCO for its assurance help to complete the project as per decided timelines on the occasion.
