Mumbai, 7 August 2023

Handloom Day is an ode to the skilled artisans who have preserved this age-old craft and continue to weave wonders with their hands. To celebrate National Handloom Day, a day dedicated to honouring the magnificence of Indian handlooms and the rich legacy they carry, NIFT Mumbai held ‘Hastavem’, an exhibition of Handloom Textiles at NIFT Mumbai Campus,  at Kharghar today.

The exhibition, 'Hastvem: a celebration of Indian Handlooms,' features a remarkable collection of 60 pieces of handloom sourced from the faculty, staff, and the Resource Centre of NIFT Mumbai. Handloom textiles and embroidered textiles from various states of India, including the enchanting North-eastern region, were showcased at the exhibition today. Each thread, design, and motif were a testimony to the cultural, social, and historical tapestry of our nation.

The event was inaugurated by President of the WICCI Maharashtra Handloom Council Smt. Savitha Suri, who is also a Textile Researcher, Author and Curator; and, Educationist Smt. Bhamini Subramaniam, who is a Design Thinker with over 35 years of experience in the profession of Textile Design, Fashion, Interiors, and Product Design.

The exhibition 'Hastvem' is curated by Prof. Sharmila Dua, Ex-Dean NIFT, & Prof. from Design Department, and Dr. Reena Agarwal, Associate Professor from Textile Design Department of NIFT Mumbai. Their dedication and expertise have contributed immensely to the curation of this spectacular event.

Apart from showcasing textiles, the exhibition also paid tributes to the craftsmanship passed down through generations in the country. It celebrates the artisan's ability to breathe life into mere threads, infusing them with the essence of our diverse culture. Moreover, it signifies the inseparable connection between tradition and modernity. The handloom industry stands as a beacon of sustainability, promoting ethical practices in harmony with the environment, and empowering countless individuals across our land. This endeavor highlights the commitment and passion of our academic community toward promoting and preserving India's handloom traditions.

This exhibition organized by NIFT Mumbai is a reminder of the magic that can be woven, from the simplest of threads and inspires all to uphold the art of handlooms, by way of appreciating the seamless fusion of tradition and contemporary expressions, and embracing the legacy of the rich heritage of our Nation.
