The National Institute of Oceanography (NIO), under the Union Ministry of Science and Technology, successfully organized a beach cleanliness drive at Caranzalem Beach in Goa today, as a significant observance of World Ocean Day. This endeavor aimed to emphasize the paramount importance of safeguarding and preserving our oceans and coastal areas.
Dr. Mani Murali, Secretary of the Ocean Society of India, addressed the gathering, extending his felicitations and heartfelt wishes to all the distinguished oceanographers present. He took note of the considerable presence of new and young faces among the participants, signifying a burgeoning interest and dedication towards the noble cause of ocean conservation.
World Oceans Day, officially designated by the United Nations General Assembly on December 5, 2008, as an annual global observance on June 8th, has been consistently celebrated by both the Coastal Studies Institute (CSI) and the National Institute of Oceanography (NIO). In adherence to this tradition, the research fellows of the NIO forum, and the student council of NIO orchestrated a series of enlightening programs within the premises of NIO to mark the occasion.
In harmony with the World Oceans Day festivities, NIO collaborated with the National Centre for Coastal Research (NCCR) and the Ocean Society of India (OSI) to conduct an extensive beach cleaning program along the Goa coast. In an inspiring display of unity, 17 coastal locations across diverse states of India were identified for similar beach cleaning initiatives, instilling a sense of camaraderie among the participants assembled in Goa.
During the beach cleaning program, meticulous instructions were imparted to the conscientious participants, emphasizing the segregation of waste materials such as plastic, bio-litter, and glass. In a demonstration of civic responsibility, they diligently sorted and collected the waste, which will subsequently be handed over to the City Corporation of Panaji (CCP) for proper disposal and recycling.
