Pre-Matric Scholarship for Backward Classes

Posted On: 14 DEC 2022 4:44PM by PIB Delhi

The pre matric scholarship has now been limited to Class IX and X in Government schools only under OBC category.

This has been done in order to rationalise the scholarship as per the following:

  1. The Right to Education (RTE) Act, 2009 makes it obligatory for the Government to provide free and compulsory elementary education (classes I to VIII) to each and every child. Accordingly only students studying in classes IX and X are covered under the pre- matric scholarship scheme for OBC.
  1. The amount of scholarship has been increased and made uniform today scholars and hostellers.

The number of students covered by the Scheme till the last three years and the amount incurred, year-wise and State-wise, is given in Annexure I.

Total of 5.67 crore students are likely to be benefitted under the Scheme during the period of five years over the XV Finance Commission Cycle.
