Indian Students bag 3 Gold, 11 Silver medals at International Olympiads

Indian students bagged 3 Gold, 16 Silver medals in various international Olympiads in Mathematics, Physics, Biology and Chemistry. While the Mathematics Olympiad was held in Norway and Biology Olympiad in Armenia, the other two, hosted by Switzerland and China, were held virtually.

International Mathematical Olympiad 2022

The Indian team bagged 1 Gold and 5 Bronze medals in the International Mathematical Olympiad 2022 held in Oslo, Norway from July 6-16, 2022. Pranjal Srivastava scored a hat trick with his 3rd consecutive Gold medal at the IMOs. He is the first Indian to win 3 Gold medals at the IMO. In his debut year, 2018, at the age of 14, he won a Silver medal and went on to win Gold medals in 2019, 2021 and 2022.

Other candidates, Arjun Gupta, Adhitya Venkata Ganesh Mangudy, Atul Shatavart Nadig, Vedant Saini, Kaustav Mishra bagged Bronze medals in the International Mathematical Olympiad 2022. In all 589 contestants participated in IMO 2022.

The Indian team was led by Prof. Niranjan Balachandran (Dept. of Mathematics, IITB) (Leader), Prof. Shanta Laishram (Theoretical Statistics and Mathematics Unit, Indian Statistical Institute, Delhi) (Deputy Leader), Mr. Sutanay Bhattacharya (Observer A) and Mr. Spandan Ghosh (Observer B).

 

International Biology Olympiad (IBO) 2022

India performed well at the 33rd International Biology Olympiad (IBO) 2022 held in Yerevan, Armenia, from 10 to 18 July, 2022. All four Indian students bagged medals. Mayank Pandhari bagged a Gold medal, Amritansh Nigam, Prachi Jindal and Rohit Panda bagged silver medals.

The Biology team was accompanied by two leaders: Prof. Ujwala Bapat (Retd. St. Xavier College, Mumbai), Prof. Sasikumar Menon (Therapeutic Drug Monitoring Lab, Mumbai) and two Scientific Observers: Dr. Dharmendra Shah (M. S. University, Baroda) and Dr. Selvaa Kumar (D. Y. Patil University, Navi Mumbai). There were 62 participating and 3 observing countries in this year's IBO.

 

International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) 2022

India performed well at the 52nd International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) 2022, organised by the Physics Association of Switzerland, and held in online mode from July 10 to July 17, 2022. All five Indian students in the competition won medals including 1 Gold and 4 Silver medals. Deevyanshu Malu won Gold medal, Abhijeet Anand, Anilesh Bansal, Dheeraj Kurukunda and Harsh Jakhar bagged silver medals.

There were two leaders from India: Dr Praveen Pathak (HBCSE), Prof. Shyamala Bodhane (Retd., St. Xaviers' College, Mumbai), and two Scientific Observers: Prof. Arun V. Kulkarni (BITS Pilani, Goa), Dr Vivek Bhide (Gogate Jogalekar College, Ratnagiri). A total of 368 students from 75 countries participated in the competition. In the country-wise medals tally, India was placed at the eleventh position, jointly with Singapore and Kazakhstan.

 

International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) 2022

All four Indian students participating in 54th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) 2022, organised by China won medals. Students Mahit Rajesh Gadhiwala, Nivesh Aggarwal, Tanishka Rameshchandra Kabra, Chinmay Khokar bagged the silver award. The Olympiad was held in online mode from July 10 to July 18, 2022.

There were four Jury Members from India who participated in the international jury discussions: Dr. Nandita Madhavan (IIT Bombay) as Head Mentor, Dr. Indrani Das (HBCSE) as Mentor, and Dr. Shraeddha Tiwari (ICT, Mumbai), Dr. V. Sudarsan (BARC) as Scientific Observers.

This year, due to the prevailing pandemic in China, the IChO was converted to a virtual competition where students could participate from their own countries. A total of 326 students from 83 countries participated in the competition. The students took the single theoretical exam at HBCSE under thorough continuous video supervision by the organisers and local invigilators.
