National Sports University in the Country

There is only one National Sports University (NSU) in the country which is being set up in Manipur (Imphal). The stage of requirement of coaches in NSU has not yet come. NSU is presently running two Under-Graduate and one Post-Graduate degree programmes which do not require coaches.
Central Government does not appoint coaches for States. The list of foreign coaches appointed on contract by Sports Authority of India (SAI) for National Sports Federations (NSFs) is at Annexure. The Central Government does not appoint coaches for States. SAI has 882 regular and 126 contract coaches presently working for training facilities.
Development of coaches and improving their competency is an ongoing process. Central Government is supporting NSFs under Human Resource Development Scheme (HRDS) for improving competency of Indian coaches. In the Annual Calendar for Training and Competitions (ACTC) meetings with various NSFs it has been impressed upon them to work out appropriate training competency and upgradation programmes of Indian coaches. National Institute of Sports, Patiala and National Sports University, Manipur are running academic programmes for developing coaches. The Government has taken a decision to set up National Centre for Sports Science and Research (NCSSR).
