As per the provisional data compiled by
the Central Bureau of Health Intelligence (CBHI), there are 13,76,013 beds available in Government hospitals including
CHCs in rural and urban areas in the Country. The details of the total number
of hospitals and beds available and average population served per Government
Hospital bed are given in annexure.
There is no global
norm for the density of hospital beds in relation to total population.
Government of India
has approved following projects for three Central Government Hospitals in
Delhi:

Since Health is a
State subject, it is the responsibility of the State Governments to make
efforts for increasing the bed strength in the Hospitals under their
jurisdiction in accordance with requirement and fund availability. The
Government of India provides assistance to the State Governments in their
efforts for expansion and upgradation of infrastructure including increase in
bed strength of hospitals through various schemes including NRHM. The Government of India has also sanctioned 8 new All India
Institutes of Medical Sciences at Bhopal, Bhubaneshswar, Jodhpur, Patna, Rae
Bareilly, Rai Ganj, (Uttar Dinajpur, WB), Raipur & Rishikesh and
up-gradation of 19 existing medical
institutions with additional bed capacity.
