Long before the concept of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) came into being, Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP) has been in the forefront in Social Engineering. Since 1993 emphasis upon Peripheral development was put and projects were implemented for the same under the Town Administration department. With the experience of Peripheral development, VSP embarked on the path of CSR after allotment of requisite budget and fulfilling legal obligations under the Companies Act.

Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited- Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, RINL-VSP – The focus areas of RINL’s CSR activities include Peripheral Development, Education, Medical & Health, People care, Sports & Cultural Efflorescence and Help during Natural calamities.

The first amongst these efforts is the development of a model steel village in Visakhapatnam District, with steel intensive buildings for community halls, Panchayat office, solar lighting facilities etc. These villages developed with the objective of propagating the use of steel in rural areas, has been developed by the RINL-VSP steel plant and handed over to District authorities. Moving further in the same direction, the company has taken up construction of steel bus shelters and distributed steel bullock carts to farmers.

RINL has implemented innovative schemes like – ‘Jaladhara’ to supply drinking water to tribal belts of Visakhapatnam district.

RINL has taken up construction of School buildings, made provision of school furniture, play equipment and provided computers etc in high schools, schools in SC/ST colonies & tribal ashram schools. RINL-VSP has been conducting various medical camps, De-addiction programmes, Child immunization, AIDS awareness campaigns, providing medical help during natural calamities and disasters etc.

The company has also supported M/s Vijaya Foundation, Kadapa, in completing construction of its School building. A Hostel Block was constructed by RIBL for 21^st Century Gurukulam under Andhra University at Visakhapatnam in addition to this support was extended to “Sankar Foundation”, for conducting free cataract operations for the benefit of the marginalized sections.

In the year 2011, RINL for the first time started CSR Projects in the areas of Girl Child Education, Health, Social Empowerment etc in states where mining leases have been applied for.

Giving an added thrust to the CSR activities in the region RINL has dedicated “Sanjeevini” Mobile Cancer detection unit to society and constructed “Arunodaya Special School” for around 200 differently-abled children for providing education upto class “X”.

In the year 2011, RINL crossed the 5000 mark in free cataract surgeries for the underprivileged people. About Rs.12 Crores. Has been committed by RINL for expenditure towards CSR during in 2011. Till date, Rs.100 Crores have been provided for CSR activities by VSP.
