New Theatres Makes a Comeback with AMI AADU
55 years after its last production hit the theatres, New Theatres, the first organization to start the studio system in India, has come out with a new Bengali film Ami Aadu (Sound of Love), which was screened in the Indian Panorama Section at IFFI, 2010 yesterday. The debut feature film of Director Somnath Gupta ,shot in 35 days ,will be released in West Bengal in the first week of December. Talking about his film with the media at a Press Conference at the media Centre here today, Shri Gupta said that through the story of a simple village girl, he wanted to give the message of communal harmony and tolerance. The Producer of the film Ms. Romita Bose Sircar became emotional and said that she is” fulfilling the dream of her father Dilip Sirkar to revive the banner of New Theatres”.
The film is a story of Aadu, a Hindu Brahmin girl who is in love with a Muslim boy Suleman. Almost immediately after their marriage, Suleman leaves for Iraq with two of his friends to earn a living. Aadu gets a tape recorder as a gift from him which becomes her all-time companion. On the eve of his departure, Suleman stealthily records the sound of their love-making and takes the cassette with him. Suleman arrives in Iraq, the war begins and Aadu receives no news of him. After seven months, Suleman’s friend Jabbar comes back with an audio cassette, leaving Aadu to fight the most difficult time of her life.
The cast of the film includes Debolina Chatterjee, Samadarshi Dutta, Rudranil Ghosh, Bidipta Chakraborty, Ena Saha & Mithu Chakraborty.
New Theatres was founded in 1931 by B.N.Sircar (recipient of Dadasaheb Phalke Award, 1972). A record number of 150 films were produced under its banner over a span of 25 years. Eminent maestros of Indian cinema started their film careers here, including great film directors Pramathesh Barua & Bimal Roy, cinematographer Nitin Bose, music directors Pankaj Mullick, R.C.Boral and many more. Some of its famous films are Devdas, Chandidas, Vidyapati, etc.
