Six Sub-Projects for development of four laning of National Highways in the State of Jammu & Kashmir under NHDP Phase II

The Cabinet Committee on Infrastructure today approved the implementation of six projects for four laning on NH-1A in the State of Jammu and Kashmir under NHDP Phase II on Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer (DBFOT) Basis. The projects are from Srinagar to Banihal, Qazigund to Banihal, Ramban to Banihal, Udhampur to Ramban, Chenani to Nashri and Jammu to Udhampur sections.
The total project cost is estimated at Rs.9377.46 crore under the DBFOT pattern. The concession period is for 20 years including a construction period of 3 to 5 years.
The main object of the project is to expedite the improvement of infrastructure in the State. The project will provide all-weather-connectivity from Jammu to Kashmir valley. It will also facilitate in reducing the journey time from Jammu to Srinagar and strategic border areas in the State of Jammu & Kashmir.
BACKGROUND:
The Cabinet gave approval for undertaking the work of four/six laning of 6702 Km covering sub-projects on the North-South and East-West Corridors of National Highway Development Project (NHDP) and other projects under NHDP Phase II in its meetings held in June, 2003 and Dec., 2003. Subsequent approval for upgradation of 264 Km of NH-1A in the State of Jammu and Kashmir under NHDP Phase-II was granted in Feb., 2009.
The major impact of the project lies in reducing the time and cost of travel of the traffic running between Srinagar to Banihal, Qazigund to Banihal, Ramban to Banihal, Udhampur to Ramban, Chenani to Nashri and Jammu to Udhampur sections. The project will be highly beneficial for development of road infrastructure and tourism in the State. It will also increase the potential of employment to local labourers for the project activities.
