169 FD Regt (OP HILL) Proceeds on un mission to Congo (MONUC)
Lieutenant General SPS Dhillon, Deputy Chief of Army Staff (Information System and Training) addressed the contingent 169 Fd Regt (OP HILL) earmarked to represent the country as a part of Indian Brigade at Democratic Republic of Congo, Africa, as part of the United Peace Keeping Mission MONUC.
169 Fd Regt (OP HILL) is the first Artillery unit to be nominated on a UN Mission, which in itself is a rare honour. This has come through due to its consistent outstanding performance since its raising on 01 Nov 1963. Immediately after raising the unit gave a sterling account of itself during the 1965 (Indo Pak War) and earned the Honour Title “OP HILL”. It there after participate in 1971 Indo Pak War. The unit has had its fair share of CI/CT exposure where in it has earned the J & K Governors Silver Salver (1995) and COAS Unit Citation “OP RAKSHAK” (1996) during its “OP RAKSHAK” tenure in J & K. Once again the unit proved itself during OP RHINO-II and earned for itself the Unit Appreciation by Army Commander, Eastern Command (2003). With the individual award tally of 90 awards (02 Shaurya Chakra, 17 Sena Medal, 02 Mentioned-in-despatches, 41 COAS Commendation Card, 01 VCOAS Commendation Card and 27 GOC-in-C Commendation Card), the Regiment is the highest decorated Artillery unit of Indian Army.
The DCOAS (IS & T) while addressing the troops praised the outstanding work done by the Indian contingents in several United Nations Peace Keeping Operations in the past and expected 169 Fd Regt (OP HILL) to live up to their standards. He reminded them of the challenging tasks ahead and exhorted them to demonstrate their tradition of selfless dedication, devotion and humanitarian approach for ensuring peace in Democratic Republic on Congo, Africa.
