Rules and Regulations for Nurses

Military Nursing Service (MNS) officers are governed by the Indian Military Nursing Service Ordinance, 1943 and Military Nursing Service (INDIA) Rules, 1944.

The original Military Nursing Service Ordinance, 1943 was amended vide The Adaptation of Laws Order (ALO), 1950 and the Commander-in-Chief (Change in Designation) Act, 1955 (XIX of 1955, S.2 and Schedule (7.5.1955).

The following amendments have been made in the Military Nursing Service Ordinance, 1943:-

1. Vide the Adaptation of Laws Order (ALO) 1950

(a) The title of the Ordinance was changed from Military Nursing Service Ordinance, 1943 to the Indian Military Nursing Ordinance, 1943

(b) The words "in the Provinces" were omitted.

(c) "Indian Military Nursing Service" was substituted for "Military Nursing Services (India)".

(d) The word ‘Crown’ was substituted by the word ‘Union’.

(e) The words ‘His Majesty’s’ were substituted by the words ‘The Indian’.

(f) The words ‘Any British subject or any subject of an Indian State’ were substituted by the words ‘Any citizen of India’.

(g) The words ‘and to those members of the Army in Indian Nursing Service Reserve who have engaged to serve with forces and person subject to the Indian Army Act, 1911 {Now Army Act, 1950 (XLVI of 1950)} were omitted

2. The words ‘Commander-in-Chief India Army’ were substituted by the words ‘Chief of the Army Staff’ by the Commander-in-Chief (Change in Designation) Act, 1955 (XIX of 1955, S.2 and Schedule (7.5.1955).

MNS Officers are entitled to Pay and Perks as per Government orders issued from time to time. They are also entitled to salute and other compliments as per their Service norms. However, being an auxiliary force having different cadre, functions and responsibilities, the pay scales of the Military Nursing Service Officers are not comparable to those of the Officers of the Regular Army.

This information was given by the Defence Minister Shri Pranab Mukherjee in a written reply to Dr. KS Manoj in Lok Sabha today.
