National Child Awards Presented to 36 Children for Outstanding Achievements

On the occasion of Bal Divas, Smt. Renuka Chowdhury, Minister of State for Women and Child Development presented the National Child Awards to 36 children for exceptional achievements in a function at Pragati Maidan today.  These Awards are given every year by the Ministry of Women and Child Development to the children in the age group of 4 to 15 years to recognize their exceptional achievements in the fields like art, culture, sports, academics etc.  The awards carry a medal, certificate and a cash prize of Rs. 20,000/- for gold medal and Rs. 10,000/- for silver medal.  The gold medal at the national level was awarded to Master Fenil Chetan Shah of Gujarat for winning several national and international chess tournaments.  Silver medals were awarded to 35 children for their exceptional achievements at the State level.  These children include Budding scientist, mathematician, painter, folk singer, classical dancer, international skates player and child with exceptional photographic memory.  The awardees also include four children with physical disabilities.

National awards for child welfare were also presented to five institutes and three individuals for their work in the area of child welfare.  These awards carry a cash prize of rupees three lakh and a certificate to each institution and rupees one lakh and a certificate in the case of individual.  The Minister also presented Rajiv Gandhi Manav Seva Award to Shri Ahanthem Tolen Singh for child welfare, Smt. Shobhana Ranade, Maharashtra for child development and Smt. Maha Jabeen, Andhra Pradesh for child protection.  Each awardee was presented along with a silver plaque. 

Congratulating the awardees, Smt. Renuka Chowdhury said the development of children and women is very high priority of the Government.  A number of initiatives are being planned and significant increase is being made in the allocation for children related schemes and programmes.  She said that achievement of the awardees shows that the country has a very bright future.

On the occasion chairperson of National Commission for Child Rights, Smt. Shanta Sinha said that the Commission is setting up mechanism to monitor the incident of child right violation and would soon start a campaign at grass root level to create awareness about child rights.

 Chairman, Parliamentary Standing Committee on HRD, Shri Janardan Dwivedi also addressed the children on the occasion.

 Smt. Renuka Chowdhury, Minister of State for Women and Child Development also inaugurated the pavilion of the Ministry of Women and Child Development in Hall no. 16 at India International Trade Fare.  It has about 90 stalls of Swayamsidha Women Self Help Groups from all States showcasing products like decorative items, traditional and modern handicrafts and handloom articles, etc.  The Pavilion also has an interesting display of schemes and programmes for women and children and provides counseling also.  Performances by State Cultural Troops, which include traditional dances, music, magic & puppet shows are also big attraction of the pavilion.  Free children Film shows at Shakuntalam Theatre, Pragati Maidan will also be organized on 16th and 17th November, 2007.
