Press Note - Biennial Elections to the council of states (Rajya Sabha) to fill the seats of Members retiring in June, 2007 and bye-Election to fill one Casual Vacancy.

The term of office of 2 members of the Rajya Sabha, i.e., Dr. Manmohan Singh and Shri Indramoni Bora elected from Assam is due to expire on 14th June, 2007.

The Commission has decided to hold biennial elections to fill up the two seats to the Council of States as per following programme: -

BYE-ELECTION FROM WEST BENGAL

There is a vacancy in Rajya Sabha due to the death on 20-02-2007 of Shri Chittabrata Majumdar elected from the State of West Bengal. The remaining term of the seat is up to 18-08-2011. The Commission has decided to fill this casual vacancy also alongwith the Biennial Elections mentioned above with the same schedule.
