Lt Gen S Patabhiraman hands over the baton of Colonel Commandant, the Bombay sappers to Lt Gen Noble Thamburaj
Lt Gen S Pattabhiraman, Vice Chief of the Army Staff(VCOAS) and Colonel Commandant, The Bombay Sappers, handed over the baton of Colonel Commandant, The Bombay Sappers, to Lt Gen Noble Thamburaj, General Officer Commanding, 11 Corps, here today. The VCOAS superannuates on 31 Dec 2006 after a glorious inning of 40 years in various prestigious appointments which included Defence Attache to Ankara, Turkey, the first Director General of Information Systems of the Indian Army and Army Commander of the largest operational Command of the Indian Army, namely the Western Command. As VCOAS, he has been instrumental in ensuring a high state of operational preparedness at all times, besides conceptualizing the Army’s vision for the decade ahead. The General Officer has recently, in association with Management Development Institute, Gurgaon, provided impetus to senior officers joining the corporate world as Independent Directors by steering a week long course on the subject. The General Officer also steered the affairs of the Bombay Engineering Group and Centre, Pune for a period of three years as the Colonel Commandant.

Lt Gen Noble Thamburaj, who assumes the appointment of Colonel Commandant from 01 Jan 07 is and alumnus of the Defence Services Staff College at Wellington and the National Defence College, Delhi. A Masters in Building Science from IIT, Delhi, he has had a stellar career spanning Counter Insurgency operations environment and is presently commanding the Vajra Corps.
