Setting up of the Sixth Central Pay Commission
The Union
Cabinet today gave its approval for setting up the Sixth central Pay Commission.
The Commission will also examine desirability, the need, and quantum to sanction
interim relief, if any.
This will enable consideration of certain
aspects of service conditions of Central Government employees.
The Commission will comprise one Chairman
in the rank of Minister of State; one part-time Member and one Member-Secretary
in the rank of Secretary/ Additional Secretary to Government of India. The
Commission along with the full complement of posts will be a purely temporary
body existing for a period of 18 months from the date of its constitution.
Background:
Pay Commissions are periodically constituted
to examine various issues such as pay and allowances, retirement benefits,
conditions of service, promotion policies, etc. of the Central Government
employees. There is no stipulation regarding any specific time period for
constitution of a Pay Commission for Central Government employees. Till now
five Central Pay Commissions have been constituted whose details are as below:-
