National Lake Conservation Plan
Fact Sheet

The National Lake Conservation Plan (NLCP) was approved by Government of India during IXth Plan as 100% centrally sponsored scheme.  The proposals related to Powai, Ooty & Kodaikanal Lakes were approved with 100% central assistance.  Funding pattern under NLCP was modified w.e.f. January 2001 from 100% central funding to 70:30 cost sharing between the Central and the State Government.  Through a study, the Ministry has identified 62 lakes for conservation under NLCP.  This list has been sent to all State Governments for prioritization of lakes in their states and submission of proposals for consideration by the Ministry.  New projects are to be added depending upon the pollution status prioritization by State and resource availability under the Plan.

As of January 2006, a total of 22 projects for conservation of 37 lakes have been sanctioned in 10 States for a total estimated cost of about Rs. 486 crore.  Conservation works for 8 lakes have been completed till March 2005.  The original outlay for NLCP during the Xth plan is Rs. 220 crore out of which an amount of about Rs. 106 crore have been released till date.  The outlay for current financial year is Rs. 56.22 crore, out of this funds amounting to Rs. 48.22 crore have been released till January 2006.
