Launching of National Programme for prevention and Control of Cancer

The erstwhile National Cancer Control Programme (NCCP) was in the year 2010 integrated into National Programme for Prevention and Control of Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Disease and Stroke (NPCDCS) with a focus on promotion of healthy lifestyle, early diagnosis and management of common Cancers, diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases. The common cancers include cervix cancer, breast cancer and oral cancer. Under the programme, diagnosis and treatment facilities are provided through different levels of healthcare. From 2013-14 onwards, interventions under NPCDCS for prevention, early detection, diagnosis and treatment, which can be taken up upto District level, have been brought under the umbrella of National Health Mission. The objectives of the programme include awareness generation for Cancer prevention, screening, early detection and referral to an appropriate level institution for treatment.

 

Health is a State subject, the NPCDCS programme is being implemented to supplement the efforts of the State Government.

 

Government of India has also approved a “Tertiary Care for Cancer” scheme under NPCDCS in the year 2013-14. Under the said scheme, Government of India assists to establish/set up  State Cancer Institutes (SCI) and Tertiary Care Cancer Centres (TCCC) in different parts of the country.
