Trial Excavation at the ancient site of Daudia – Khera, Sangrampur – District Unnao (Uttar Pradesh)
Following is the status of Trial Excavation at the ancient site of Daudia – Khera, Sangrampur – District Unnao (Uttar Pradesh) from 18.10.2013 to 29.10.2013. The status was released to media by the Director General, Archaeological Survey of India, Shri Pravin Srivastava here today.
“On the basis of the Geological Survey of India’s report and considering the potential of the site the Director General, ASI has permitted on 09.10.2013, the Superintending Archaeologist, Lucknow Circle to undertake the trial excavation under the provision of the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1958 and Rules of 1959 framed thereto.
After cleaning and sweeping the area of the operation as suggested by the experts of the Geological Survey of India with the consultation of our staff the proposed trenches laid out and the digging started from 18.10.2013 in quadrant 3 of the YBI. The Archaeological Excavation is restricted between the space of two parallel brick wall (3.00-m x 2.50-m) and continued upto the depth of 4.80-m below the surface and reached a level of Kankar formation in part of the trench which actually started from 4.60-m.
Now subject preparation for photographs and drawings of this trench is in progress. We are also planning to extend the area of digging in the same trench, after removing the structure of the bricks wall. A few Sherds of Black Slipped ware, a Sherd of Northern Black Polished ware along with Red ware Sherds of early historical periods were found from Layer No. 9.
I. These are the following antiquities recovered so far from this trench:
(i) Glass bangles;
(ii) Iron nails;
(iii) Hopscotch;
(iv) Fragmentary miniature stone figure of lion; and
(v) Terracotts Arecanut shaped beads
II. Burnt brick structures:
1. Lakhauri-brick wall (South-West Corner of the trench) (14 courses)
2. Burnt brick wall (Section facing East) – 1.46-m long (Only one course) - Brick Size – 47 x 24 x 6.75 cm
3. Burnt brick wall (Section facing West) – 0.97-m long (Only two courses) – Brick Size – 48 x 24 x 6.75 cm
III. Hearth – 02 Nos.
The team of GSI with the consultation of the ASI Officials at the site has suggested another area at the site close to river Ganga for trial excavation. Accordingly, a new trench XA2 has also been laid-out with proper cleaning of the surface and the digging would take place from tomorrow.
A representative of State Department of Archaeology, Uttar Pradesh and SDM, Bara District Unnao as Liaisoning Officer is also supervising.”
