ESIC aims to set up a hospital in Nagaland
The Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) North East Region organized its 1st Regional Board Meeting for Nagaland and an Awareness-cum-Outreach Programme at Kohima on 10.06.2025. The event aimed at sharing vital information about the ESI Scheme, addressing stakeholder grievances, and promoting enhanced healthcare and social security coverage across the state.
The landmark event was chaired by Shri MoatoshiLongkumer, Minister of Labour, Employment, Skill Development & Entrepreneurship, Government of Nagaland, who also serves as the Chairman of the ESIC Regional Board. In his remarks, the Minister emphasized the need to broaden the coverage of employers and employees under the ESI Scheme, ensuring wider access to its social security benefits for the working population of Nagaland.
During the event, Ms. T. L. Yaden, Financial Commissioner, ESIC, highlighted ESIC’s role as one of the world’s largest social security organizations and emphasized the potential for convergence with Ayushman Bharat PMJAY to enhance healthcare access in Nagaland. Shri Pranay Sinha, Insurance Commissioner, North East Zone, underscored about the setting up of an ESIC Hospital in Nagaland once the number of Insured Persons reaches 15,000, urging increased registration and coverage of the workers. Dr. Soumya Chakraborty, Director, NIMSR, praised the ESI Scheme and its Ward of IP initiative for reserving seats for the children of Insured Persons in ESIC Medical Colleges & Hospitals. Shri Robert L Guite, Regional Director I/c, ESIC North East Region, shared plans to expand the coverage and improve services.
The programme saw participation from numerous stakeholders, including employers, employees, representatives of Employers’ Associations, and Employees’ Unions. Also present were P. Sotsula, Commissioner & Secretary, LESDE, Anoop Khinchi, Commissioner & Secretary, Health & Family Welfare, and Avile Vitso, CEO, ESI Scheme, Nagaland, along with senior officers from ESIC and the Labour Department, Government of Nagaland.
The interactive session allowed stakeholders to share feedback, raise concerns, and propose suggestions to improve the implementation and outreach of the ESI Scheme in Nagaland. With ongoing implementation across 63 districts in North-East Region of the country, the programme marked a significant step in bridging the information gap and strengthening healthcare and social security mechanisms for the working class.
Currently, the ESI Scheme is implemented in 08 districts of Nagaland — Dimapur, Kohima, Mokokchung, Chumukedime, Niuland, Tseminyu, Wokha, and Zunheboto — covering 5,321 insured persons and 20,646 beneficiaries.
