The National Commission for Women (NCW), in collaboration with SheWings, held discussions to observe the Menstrual Hygiene Day at the Commission’s premises. The objective of the event was to break taboos surrounding menstruation and empower women by raising awareness around menstrual health and hygiene. The Commission held discussions and deliberations with esteemed stakeholders and distinguished guests from the menstrual hygiene sector.
Ms Meenakshi Negi, Member Secretary, NCW, Madan Mohit Bhardwaj, Founder, SheWings, Upasana Arora, MD, Yashoda Hospitals, Tejaswani Gautam, IPS and Ashutosh Pandey, Under Secretary, NCW graced the occasion.
The discussions were conducted in two sessions; a knowledge Session that shed light on the role of financial independence in women empowerment and how poor women hygiene is a barrier in this journey. The session also discussed the way forward to support the women of our country.
The other technical session was held on the effects of poor menstrual hygiene management on the reproductive system. The discussions were followed by an award ceremony to honor individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to raising awareness about menstrual hygiene.
The Commission invited Garima Bhandari, wellness coach, Smt. Aishwarya Laxmi, Basic Education Officer, Dr. Sweta Gupta, Dr. Dimple Bordoloi, Dr. Anjali Kumar, Dr. Surbhi Singh and Dr. Roli Banthia as panelists.
The participants included representatives from NGOs, government bodies, civil society organizations, educators, healthcare professionals, students, and the staff of the Commission.
Menstrual Hygiene Day is observed globally on May 28th each year with the aim of breaking silence and fostering awareness around menstrual health and hygiene. The Commission celebrates the event every year by holding discussions, awareness programs, and street plays to raise awareness on menstrual health and hygiene among women and girls.
