Plastic wastes can be used as a fuel/ reductant due to the presence of Carbon and Hydrogen. Presently, a very marginal amount of plastic waste generated within the premises of the steel companies is being used intermittently on trial basis.

Steel industry being a deregulated industry and use of plastic wastes as fuel/ reductant would be contingent on techno-economic feasibility.

This information was given by the Union Minister of Steel Shri Ram Chandra Prasad Singh in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha today
