ACCESS TO POTABLE WATER
As reported by States/ UTs, as on 13.12.2021, out of 17.01 lakh rural habitations in the country, 13.46 lakh (79.11%) having 79.44% population have provision of potable drinking water with supply level of more than 40 litre per capita per day (lpcd) and 3.18 lakh (18.72%) rural habitations having 18.80% population with supply level of less than 40 lpcd with sources at a reasonable distance and 0.37 lakh (2.17%) rural habitations having 1.76% population are reported to have water quality issues in drinking water sources. Since August, 2019, to make provision of potable tap water supply to every rural household of the country by 2024, Government of India in partnership with States is implementing JalJeevan Mission (JJM). At the time of announcement of JalJeevan Mission, out of 18.93 Crore rural households, 3.23 Crore (17%) households were reported to have tap water connections. In last 27 months, 5.43 Crore (28.2%) rural households have been provided with tap water connections. Thus, as of date, out of 19.22 Crore rural households in the country, 8.66 Crore (45%) households are reported to have tap water supply in their homes.
