Bidding for and Hosting the 36th International Geological Congress 2020
The Union Cabinet today approved the proposal of the Ministry of Mines for bidding and hosting the 36th International Geological Congress 2020. This will provide a forum for presenting and sharing scientific results across the whole spectrum of geosciences and also encourage international networking of leading geological surveys/ institutions / scientists of the world. It will be a great opportunity for Indian geoscientists, academicians and researchers to interact with the world's frontier scientists and also to showcase Indian progress and achievement in geosciences in the recent times.

The total cost involved will be approximately Rs.52 crore.

This congress was hosted in India in 1964 in New Delhi. Thus, after 56 years, it will be hosted by India again, if the bid is successful.

The event is proposed to be hosted jointly by the Ministry of Mines and Ministry of Earth Sciences.This event will be accompanied by field excursions to typical geological sites in India and adjoining countries viz. Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Pakistan, whose National Science Academies are also lending support to the bid attempt of India.
