Tremors in Kerala
Frequent tremors occurred in Kerala during the last ten years. In all, 16 earthquakes have been recorded in the Kerala region during last ten years. Of these, 3 were in the magnitude range of 3.6-5.0 in the year 2000, 3 in magnitude range of 3.1-4.8 in 2001, 3 in the magnitude range of 3.0-3.7 in 2006, 2 in the magnitude range of 2.8-3.0 in 2007, one event of magnitude 2.8 in 2010 and 4 in the magnitude range of 3.1-3.5 during 2011.
As per the seismic zoning map of India, prepared by the Bureau of Indian Standards [IS-1893 (Part-1): 2002], country has been grouped into four seismic zones, viz. Zone-II, III, IV and V. Of these, Zone V is the most seismically active region, while zone II is the least active. Kerala fall in both Zone-II and Zone-III.
The Minister of State in the Ministry of Science and Technology and Earth Sciences Shri Ashwani Kumar in a written reply to a question by Shri Anto Antony in Lok Sabha today gave this information.
