Indira Awaas beneficiaries can avail funds to construct toilets in House
Indira Awaas Yojana (IAY) scheme has been dovetailed with Total Sanitation Campaign (TSC) Programme with effect from 20th December, 2006 and the IAY beneficiary can avail fund available under that Programme for construction of a toilet with the IAY house. To ensure compliance of these instructions, a letter has been issued to the State Governments to make it mandatory that all IAY beneficiaries, if eligible, simultaneously are sanctioned one toilet each under TSC. The information was given by the Minister of State for Rural Development Shri Pradeep Jain in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha today. He said, however, due to people’s traditional and cultural attitudes many rural households are reluctant to construct a sanitary latrine along with the house thereby resulting in non-achievement of the target. The beneficiaries are, however, persuaded and motivated to take up construction of sanitation latrines along with the construction of houses and simultaneously IEC activities are also taken up to create awareness among the beneficiaries about benefits of toilets and thereof hygiene and cleanliness to bring about attitudinal changes.
