National Policy on Older Persons, 1999 envisages State support to ensure
financial and food security, health care, shelter and other needs of older
persons, equitable share in development, protection against abuse and
exploitation, and availability of services to improve the quality of their
lives.
The
Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment is implementing the Scheme of
Integrated Programme for Older Persons (IPOP) under
which financial assistance is provided to Government/ NGOs/ Panchayati
Raj Institutions/ local bodies etc. for running and maintenance of old age
homes, day care centres and mobile medicare units, etc.
The Ministry of Rural
Development is implementing the Indira Gandhi
National Old Age Pension Scheme (IGNOAPS) under which Central assistance is
given towards pension @ Rs. 200/- per month to persons above 65 years belonging
to a household below poverty line which is meant to be supplemented by at least
and equal contribution by the States so that each beneficiary gets at least Rs.
400/- per month as pension.
Various concessions
like income tax rebate; rail, bus and air fare; special medical facilities,
etc. are provided to senior citizens by the Government. State-wise details of
grants/financial assistance given for old age home during the last three years
are given in the Table below:
