Protection of Fishermen by Coast Guard
Indian Coast guard (ICG) is mandated to providing protection to Indian fishermen including assistance to them at sea while they are in distress. During the current year, ICG has launched 08 Maritime Search and Rescue (SAR) missions off Gujarat Coast and saved 33 lives at sea. ICG also provides assistance to fishing boats during distress and machinery breakdown at sea. The ICG interacts with fishing community though community interaction programme and educates them on safety measures, communication equipment handling, safe seamanship practice etc. Further, an emergency Maritime SAR telephone number 1554 has been put for easy access by fishermen. During the current year, a total of 84 Community Interaction Programme were conducted in Gujarat and 320 Indian fishing boats were shepherded back from crossing over Indo-Pak maritime boundary.

This information was given by Defence Minister Shri AK Antony in a written reply to Shri Natuji Halaji Thakor in Rajya Sabha today.
