Unicef Representatives Call on DR. C.P.Joshi
The Ministry of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj would work together with the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) for the upliftment of the people living in the rural areas . The focus would be on sanitation and improving hygiene for a healthy society. This was agreed during a meeting of Mr. Anthony Lake, Executive Director, United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) with the Union Minister for Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Dr. C.P.Joshi at Krishi Bhawan here today.

The Rural Development Minister said the efforts should be made to increase the capacity at the panchayat level and improving the service delivery systems in the rural areas. Mechanism. The emphasis should be on Economic Empowerment of the vulnerable sections of the society, provision of safe drinking water and Sanitation especially in the schools and internet connectivity to local elected i.e. Panchayats. Dr. Joshi said with the implementation of social welfare schemes in the rural areas, progress is visible. However a lot needs to be done by applying the concept of convergence with the other ministries in providing the basic amenities in rural areas..

Dr. Joshi said that there was scope for cooperation with UNICEF in raising the awareness among the people especially about the issues related to health, hygiene and sanitation in villages. Another area could be the training of the functionaries towards effective implementation of the welfare schemes.

The meeting was attended by Secretary, Ministry Of Rural Development Shriu B.K.Sinha along with other senior officials from the ministry. The UNICEF was also represented by Ms. Karin Hulshof, Representative and Ms. Lizttee Burger, Chief of Water and Sanitation.
